Question by Chris Schock: How come we go to war with Iraq (b/c of the “atrocities,” not oil supposedly) but we ignore oil-free Zimbabwe?
I’m not trying to start a flame war, for real. I’m asking out of lack of knowledge. Why does it seem like we pick and choose some of these things and call it “because of the atrocities going on there” (Bush’s words, not mine), but there are horrid atrocities going on in several countries too (Zimbabwe was just one example), and we don’t do squat for them in the name of “righting some wrongs” (Bush’s words again, not mine).
I’ve watched news, read stuff from both anti-war and pro-war and I really am just trying to get rational explanations. So please don’t waste time just saying “Because Bush is an idiot” or whatever – shed some factual light!!

The war in Iraq was because of atrocities and the fact that we thought Iraq had WMDs and was a threat to other countries in the region. (After all they did invade Kuwait in the 90s)
Zimbabwe is not really a threat to anyone except it’s own unfortunate people. Also, there is not a base from which the US could launch an invasion lnto Zimbabwe without creating a diplomatic firestorm. In Iraq they had Kuwait. Thirdly people like yourself have made such a fuss about about Iraq that the US will probably be put off military intervention for years. This may not be a good thing.
