Creative Writing – Book Covers & Jacket Design

A book jacket has barely a second to influence a browser to stop;  It then has another second to convince the browser to pick it up and take a look at the blurb. Then, and only then, do the words take over and hopefully do their job.

The book jacket is the first thing that speaks to a reader, not the words within. The book jacket needs to speak directly to its target audience and to do that, it needs to know their nuances, speak their language, and how to push their buttons. That’s why book jacket design is so crucial to your book’s success. If a picture speaks a thousand words, it better be the right picture.

While many argue that you can’t judge a book by its cover, many consumers allow this attention-getting book feature to play a large part in their selection process. When designing a cover jacket, aim to create a book covering that is both attention getting and representative of the story contained within the text. By putting care into the creation of this book cover, you can increase the likelihood that potential readers find and select the book in question.

When it comes to choosing a colour to use as your book jacket background, pick a colour that is thematically appropriate for the book in question. For example, if you’re covering a book of horror stories, you are likely to want a black background instead of a stark-white option.

When it comes to images you need to select the most appropriate image. Pick an illustrated or photographic image. If the book jacket is intended for mass production and distribution it would be wise to ensure that you properly secure the rights to these images to avoid legal issues.

When picking a font in which to type the title and author’s name, select one that is thematically appropriate for the book as well as one that pairs well with the picture featured. For example, a historical fiction novel may look best with an antique-looking, script font, while a book about high school cheerleading may fit more appropriately with an Impact-style font, like those found on spirit posters.

Add the title and author’s last name on the spine. Place this title in the same font as you used on the front, or in a more attention-getting font that still corresponds with the cover font.

Place a teaser either on the reverse of the book or on the tab that folds into the front of the book. Include enough information in the blurb so that readers can ascertain the gist of the book, but not so much that the ending is given away. Try to conclude your blurb with a cliff-hanger to entice your readers.

When it comes to the blurb add sentences pulled from reviews of the work or the author’s past work to the back of the book, or on one of the folds in tabs. If you have no reviews from which to pull, replace these sentences with sentences of text from the book that are particularly important or intriguing to give readers a taste of what the book contains.

Great jacket at a reasonable price

After looking at hundreds of jackets, I decided on the M-Edge Latitude in red/black. I like the all-around zip, fleece lining, and hardboard construction. My kindle fits securely in the corner tabs. It is attractive and protects my kindle very well. The only drawback being that although the pictures show that your kindle power cord may be stored in either the zip front pocket or slip pocket on the back, I found that it was just too tight a fit to really be practical. Overall, I think this is a great way to carry and protect your investment at a reasonable price. I paired mine with the Zen Revisited Design Protective Decal Skin Sticker for a great custom look!

M-Edge Jacket is Marvelous

I wanted a jacket that enclosed my Kindle on all sides since I often carry it in my gym bag. The jacket is made of a high-quality material and it even has a few utility pockets on the outside. When I’m reading my Kindle I fold the left side of the jacket back. The material that rests against my hand is very soft and comfortable to hold. I highly recommend this product!

Best Cover yet!!!

I absolutely love this cover, it compact and keeps my Kindle very secure. As a matter of fact, the cover make holding the Kindle much more comfortable. Great Jacket for my Kindle!

This jacket is terrific! The zippers allow me to charge it with the jacket still on. I wasn’t sure if I was going to hold the Kindle like a book or fold over the cover when I bought it, but like the ability to do both! The front pocket with zipper holds the charger with ease and the padding inside is great…took it on vacation and felt confident that it was protected! I would definitely recommend this product.

M-Edge for Kindle

I’ve been using this with my Kindle, for about a month now. While it looks nice and is protective, its not easily used while actually reading. When the front cover is folded back, its much too thick and bulky and you have to remove the charger, etc, from the pockets before folding it back for reading purposes. I just use it while traveling, to protect my Kindle.

Great Jacket. I bought this as a gift and needed something red. This was my first choice and it really works. You can use it as a zip cover or you can insert the corners into leather retainers and it becomes a jacket. The extra zip p0cket is big enough to hold the charger and cord. That is very convenient. 
The fabric material is very strong and zippers seem to be very durable. It is also padded to provide protection for your kindle.

Excellent protection for your Kindle

I chose the M-Edge Latitude Kindle Jacket primarily for utility and durability. It was the right choice on both counts. It is very well-made and the zippers are heavy enough to last, but still be stylish. The soft inner sleeve protects my Kindle screen from errant doggies, cookie crumbs or carelessly placed soda cans. Mostly it puts at ease my anxious imagination about such incidents. I gave due consideration to leather, the material comsurate with my pride in owning a Kindle. I opted for the practical solution. The Jacket fits snugly, but well. It is well-crafted and easy to keep. It has a pocket for the reading lamp when in use or stored. 
The only criticism I have is that the charger does not fit in the pocket as illustrated. I chose the red and black. It looks better than in the picture.
