ECTACO Inc., a New York based company best known for their jetBook budget eBook readers, hand-held electronic translators, and translating software has announced that the jetBook and jetBook LITE will now support Adobe DRM protected formats and 4 new languages. The jetBook is most known for being the strongest price competitor to the Kindle and Nook and stays steady as the leader in entry level eReaders.
David Lubinitsky, ECTACO’s CEO explains, “We decided to give the jetBook a little upgrade via feedback we received from our dedicated customers saying that although they really liked our product, especially because of its technical features and flexible pricing policy, Adobe DRM support would be a great addition. We hope that now our customers will find getting eBooks on the jetBook to be much easier and the reading itself even more comfortable than before.”
The new features will drastically enhance ECTACO’s performance in the market. Since the majority of online stores sell Adobe DRM protected eBooks, the company is now likely to embrace a new spectrum of consumers who utilize these venues to purchase their virtual novel collections. The new language additions allow an even greater variety of users to read books in their native languages including Arabic, Farsi, Vietnamese and Hebrew.
Support for DRM encoded ePub files allow for the purchase of bestseller eBooks from popular online retailers including Barnes & Noble, Kobo, Borders, ebooks.com and many others. Additionally, downloading eBooks from local libraries will now be accessible as a result of the Adobe DRM.
The update will be available via free download for owners of the ECTACO jetBook and jetBook LITE on www.jetbook.net. All jetBooks sold after July 22nd will come with the Adobe DRM support integrated.

I was at the unveiling of the new Sony eReader (PRS-350) today at NYC and came upon another one from a group of people called the jetBook MINI. Check out the dimension pictures of the angles here: www.flickr.com Both eReaders looked amazing and the video shows how the screen changes from page to page. Both are extremely light, portable and have great functionality. The Sony will use an eInk and the jetBook MINI will continue with its success on the TFT screen. Both are fast but the jetBook MINI does take the cake in page turn quickness. The Sony does have a touch screen now too which is great (and i am much a fan of) but it does have the problem of getting dirty after the fifth swipe. You can also use the keys at the bottom to page turn and zoom in on the font but they are rather small, so the focus is primarily all touch screen (which does UNFORTUNATELY lag at times). The jetBook MINI (although i didnt get to play around with it much since the group said its release will be soon) felt very comfortable in my hand and runs on 4 AAA batteries instead of a built-in LiOn. The exterior is super sleek and they said it will be featured in many different color combinations. It’s also very light and a bit smaller than the Sony. (check the pics in the link above for more angles) All in all, both eReader look great and i cant wait to see them on shelves and more about the jetBook MINI. The Sony is the next gen version of their current PRS series and the jetBook MINI is the third …

Pocketbook 360 next to Jetbook showing the difference in viewing angle and page turning. The Pocketbook has many fonts in addition to the option of adding custom fonts, the Jetbook comes with two that looks similar to each other. The Pocketbook 360 has page breaks between chapters whereas the Jetbook there is none. The Jetbook has no flash at page turns. The Jetbooks has better contrast at the ideal reading angle but readability drops off rapidly off angle. The Jetbook does not flash between page turns and turns pages almost instantly.
After the first day of receiving the Apple iPad i decided to test out how it would work as an eReader with all the hype around it. Unfortunately, the outcome did not match the predictions. There is a lot of glare, and after about 15 minutes of reading your eyes WILL get tired. Here’s my take on the review and i threw in our Ectaco jetBook in the mix as a comparison to outdoor reading in the end. The Ectaco Jetbook is the smallest among the among the leading e-book readers. The screen size is at a mere 5 inches, which can be a great advantage or disadvantage depending on your personal preference. The small size compromises on its readability on one hand, but greatly enhances its portability on the other.
To make up for its size, this e-book reader has a great feature that enables you to rotate the text on the screen. You could either read your e-book straight up, or read it at landscape by rotating the device. The contrast and readability of the Ectaco Jetbook may not be as good as other models such as the Amazon Kindle or the Sony Prs 505, but it is good enough to provide a comfortable read in most lighting conditions.
Because of its small size, the Ectaco Jetbook seems to have a longer battery life compared to many other e-book readers. A single charge can last up to a week of constant use. This little device also boots up faster than many e-book models. There are three conveniently located page-turn buttons that allows for easy page flipping. The page turns on the Ectaco Jetbook are also smoother than many leading e-book models.
A feature that makes the Ectaco Jetbook stand out among the rest is its great built in file manager. Compared to the Amazon Kindle and the Sony e-book reader, the Jetbook has a great file manager that allows you to manage, delete and organize your e-book files. Browsing though thousands of files on this little device is also a breeze. Like many e-book readers, the Ectaco Jetbook has a built in MP3 player.
