Glossy expensive cookbooks don’t last long in modern day kitchens with exposure to water marks, margarine stains and accidental page tears, and it’s doubtful that when Apple designed the iPad they had revolutionizing kitchens in mind. But as it turns out the cookbook and the iPad have met at an unforeseen crossroad, with the iPad turning out to be the ultimate kitchen companion.
Amateur chefs globally and indeed a few master chefs on television are turning to the handy iPad for easy access to recipes. The iPhone and iPod Touch are also popular choices in the kitchen, providing pocket sized portable recipe reading. The iPad has become perhaps the most attractive choice due to its larger screen and capability of displaying the entire recipe for viewing at a distance.
As the desire for healthy eating on demand grows, the iPad is becoming a regular feature in the kitchens of many budding chefs and young professionals. There has already been a vast increase in the popularity of PDF cookbooks, with Nikki Young’s Paleo Cookbook series becoming one of the more prominent market leaders. This popularity is due to a rise in the demand for healthier recipes amidst a generation of unhealthy people exposed to the risk of obesity, diabetes and other chronic diet related health conditions.
Nikki explains, “The Paleo Cookbooks have risen in popularity because people are turning back towards healthy eating and away from junk food. PDF Cookbooks increase accessibility and fit into the modern day demand for cooking with variety and efficiency. The iPad and iPhone provide the perfect platform for portable recipe reading.”
Modern day life is all about efficiency and saving time. Cooking is often time consuming enough without having to search for a cookbook and then repeatedly searching for a recipe whilst propping the page open with a cake pasting brush. The iPad, and indeed the iPhone and iPod Touch are capable of storing thousands of PDF cookbook recipes, making life in the kitchen potentially more efficient and enjoyable.
Nikki Young’s customer feedback substantiates these perceived benefits. “Since the emergence of the iPhone and the iPad, we have received very positive feedback from our customers explaining how easy they find reading our Cookbooks in PDF format. We are constantly looking at ways to make our PDF Paleo Cookbooks as aesthetically pleasing as traditional cookbooks”.
When it comes to selecting a new healthy recipe, morning, noon or night, there isn’t currently a more practical medium than the iPad or its close cousins the iPhone and iPod Touch. Whilst traditional cookbooks still enjoy solid sales, for those with a busy schedule still wanting to maintain a healthy diet, the solution has most certainly arrived.

Enhance the interior by modern kitchen tables
The kitchen is considered to be the heart of the entire house. It is a place where families spent their quality bonding time together. Many families start their day in the kitchen with breakfast and end it with dinner. Kitchen table forms an integral part of the kitchen as it is more in use than the dining tables. Kitchen tables should be simple and convenient so that it provides ease while working in the kitchen. The dining table is the hub of the house. Especially, at the end of the day or on the weekends, the dining table is abuzz with the happenings of the day or talks over something upcoming or recent. Some apartments have also found space for the dining tables in their front room.
Designing kitchen according to space, décor and customized needs is a challenging task. It depends on individual taste and preferences and these preferences do vary from person to person. The elegance of the kitchen will surface only when the right things are kept in the appropriate place. How do you fit the kitchen table in the overall kitchen design? You possibly have two options. One: you fix the dining table first and then create the ambience. Two: in an already created ambience, choose from kitchen tables, a table that will fit well in the décor.
Most families want their kitchen to be well designed, well ventilated and high on hygiene. The design of the kitchen table and its proximity to the décor will make it the perfect table made for the perfect place.

Computer nook in the kitchen – a great idea!
Designers report that it is becoming increasingly popular to incorporate a space to work at complete with computer, in the kitchen of the average home. Most families don’t have the space for a complete office to be fitted, but many are wanting to be able to watch children do homework and surf the net, and for you to keep an eye on them, answer the telephone, pay bills and write the next day’s shopping list. All in the hub of the home – the kitchen.
It has therefore become a challenge for designers to work out ways in which to accommodate an area within the kitchen that will perform these functions. If you are contemplating designing a kitchen yourself, you will first need to decide what activities you want to do there, and who will be using the space allotted. Although different for every member of the family, it is necessary to establish how many people will be using the computer at once, for example, so that sitting room can be allowed. (Children often access the computer in twos or threes!)
When deciding exactly where to place the office area, try not to interfere with the traffic flow in the kitchen. Also avoid being near heat and water. Imagine where the seating will be when people at the ‘desk’ are using it, and make enough space around this area to move. Start with positioning the ‘desk’ which should be least least 40-42 inches long in order to work at comfortably. Kids need space to spread out their homework books. The work surface may be part of the cabinetry plan you have for the rest of the kitchen and integrated fully into it, or it may be made of a contrasting material or color in order to define the area better. If space is limited, think about making it the same as the kitchen proper. Then, if and when you need space to stack the dinner plates or leave a pie to cool, you can spill over from the kitchen onto the worktops here, quite seamlessly and naturally. Design the space under the desk so that you have at least two cabinets or cupboards that can easily store the computer ‘tower’, viding enough height and depth, and adequate ventilation. Make sure that the desktop / work surface has a cavity for running cables and leads down through it to the tower, and that there is a power point close by inside the cabinet. The power cables should be run through hollow plastic channels or wire trenches for aesthetics, safety and to avoid wires getting tangled up.
Above the work surface you should have at least two sets of power points to support your telephone, printer, fax machine, charger, and whatever other device you want to be able to keep here. If the work surface isn’t long, have cabinets above it starting at a level at which you won’t bump your head every time you lean forward to sit down, and rising to an aesthetically pleasing height. (Look at the height in line with your other wall cabinets and see how it all looks together). You can use these cabinets for paper, supplies, equipment, office filing systems and any other office related business. Alternatively, you could use the wall cabinetry to house the computer tower and printer, fax and power sources, while using the lower cabinets for paper and filing. It is sensible to decide what will work best in an ergonomic way for you.
The height of the ‘desk’ or work surface is really important. Match this to your height and the type of seating that you will use to work there… especially if you will be sitting for extended periods of time. The standard desk height is about 29-30 inches. But you would be very wise to add a slide-out drawer under the desk top so that you can hide the keyboard and mouse when not in use. Not only will this help in the integrated, seamless look that you may be striving for in the kitchen, but it will keep things tidy and clean. The chair or stool you choose for the desk should be suited to your needs. A good idea is to get a swivel chair that is the right shape and form for desk work. It could be a gas-lift chair so that different people can use it equally comfortably. Make sure that it is comfortable and easy to move away out of the kitchen when you want to.
Lighting is very important. General lighting won’t be adequate over a work surface, so you will need to install some sort of task lighting. This could take the form of under cabinet recessed halogen ‘downlights’ above the work surface, and in front of the person working. Or you could use a small fluorescent bar light, set under the cabinets. Another option is a pendant lamp hung over the work surface. The lighting should also be glare-free. Shadows and glare on the computer can easily be avoided with some planning. Shelving above the middle part of the desk top can be very useful. You can use it to place photographs, to showcase special items, or use it for books. If not office books, then cookery books. Once you have planned your kitchen – office, you can look forward to many happy days being right in the action, in the heart of your home.

Some Great Ideas For A Kitchen Nook
For many, the most popular room in the house is the kitchen. If you have a kitchen nook that goes along with that, then you’re lucky. But you may also be stumped for how to decorate your nook. Luckily, there are countess options available to you.
One thing that you will want to do is choose a style for your nook that won’t overwhelm the kitchen itself. You want your nook to remain a nook – a special little place to tuck away a table, a desk, a seating area, or even a combination of all of these. Let form follow function here. In other words, decide what you really need your nook to be on a practical level, and then let that idea dictate your design.
For example, do you really need an extra table for eating? If so, then design around that idea that the space will be for eating. If not, then there are no rules that say a nook has to have a table for eating. Let the space serve whatever purpose you want it to serve.
If you do, in fact, want extra space for eating, then go all the way with it. You may want to put in a banquet bench and create something of a booth area. Depending on your family situation, one good idea is to go small with the table – a cozy little place for two or three at the most.
Even with a large family, if you just need a space where one or two can sit down and eat a quick meal, then this might be idea. Or a little table might also be an idea place for a quiet breakfast for mom or dad after the kids have cleared out of the house for the day.
If you nook is large, you might consider a full size table. For many, a nook is where most of the eating in the house actually gets done. If this is so for you, then trying to make your nook into too many things may be a mistake. Let it simply be the principle eating area and don’t clutter it up with other objectives.
If you don’t need it to be an eating area, then one practical idea for a nook is office space. Again, depending on your family situation, this could be an ideal spot for an office. If you have kids, however, you may find that a nook is not so ideal a spot for a “full-time office.” There are simply too many distractions.
However, it may still be the perfect spot for a small, temporary office. It can be extremely convenient to be able to pay your bills and watch the pot on the stove at the same time. Some also like the idea of combining two very different rooms into essentially one space. This gives both areas a character and a flair that they never would have had otherwise.
Finally, another idea is to make you nook a spot for displaying your favorite items – antiques, art, memorabilia, the kids’ creations, etc. Again, if you really want to do something like this, then go whole hog with it and let the space be simply that. Trying to clutter too many “spaces” into a nook is often a mistake. That said, if done simply, a combination of different “spaces” can work for you, but no matter which way you go, it’s best to clearly decide on what you want the space to be before you go about filling it up.

My iPad mounted in kitchen cabinet. Additional info at www.technolog.ie Sound is output to aux input of mini stereo (until I replace that with powered speakers). This is just the beginning for this great device! More pics at http The iPad is easily removeable (without unscrewing) – the wooden slat holding it in place is just tight enough to hold it snug. No power supply fitted yet (because battery power very good) but that is coming soon – just need to get the dremel out again. Some people have commented about the hole left in the cabinet when I remove the iPad, I have an 8×10 photo (NOT of an iPad!) glued to a piece of wood that slots into the holder on the back of the cabinet door. I bought a replacement door (which happened to be on sale) before cutting the original, in case it all went pear shaped (no pun intended!), so at any time I can abandon the idea and restore the kitchen back to the way it was. Future developments: – Install power source for iPad. – Use Apple remote App on the iPad to stream all my music from iMac to stereo via Airport express (when Apple get around to updating their Remote App to work in landscape mode!) – Radio streaming App. – EyeTv for live TV. Coverflow for browsing music would be nice – a curious omission from Apple. Bluetooth headset for Skype calls – anybody know a headset that will pair with the iPad, my Motorola won’t. – Self powered speakers to bypass stereo altogether; a commenter suggested ceiling speakers – nice!

Making the Breakfast Nook Part of the Kitchen
The breakfast nook is a small room off of the kitchen where home owners usually put a breakfast table and chairs so that they have a place to eat a majority of their meals rather than use a formal dining room. While technically it is a separate room, most designers and homeowners try to make the kitchen nook seem more like an extension of the kitchen rather than a separate room. With that in mind, it is important to look at ways to unify the two spaces.
The first, and most important way you can make these two areas of your home seem more unified is by the way you use them. Make sure that you have people in both areas at the same time that are interacting together. For example, you can have your kids doing homework while you prepare dinner and you can talk to each other about your days. In addition, you can make the breakfast nook an extension of your kitchen storage space. A breakfast nook with storage can be used for small appliances that you may not need every day, but that you want easy access to when you need them.
Another way to unify these two rooms is by color schemes and styles. If you have a country themed kitchen with wooden cabinets and colorful curtains, then it would not make much sense to have a glass modern table in your breakfast nook. You want the two spaces to complement each other. A country kitchen would be well served by a breakfast table made of wood that is stained the same color as your cabinets. If your countertop has hints of certain colors in it or if your backsplash has accent tiles of a particular color, you can purchase placemats or seat cushions of the same color to tie the breakfast nook back into the kitchen.
Another more subtle way to make sure that the two rooms match up well is to look at lines. For example, measure the distance between the tops of the cabinets in your kitchen and the ceiling. Then try to make sure that the window valances in the breakfast nook are the same distance from the ceiling. This simple act will make sure that the eye is not drawn to any one place first and that the rooms flow together.
Finally, if your kitchen and breakfast nook are separated by any kind of barrier, then you might want to consider getting rid of it. For example, some breakfast nooks are separated from the kitchen by a half wall or even a full wall with a doorway. As long as the wall is not important to the structure of the house, I see no reason for this artificial separation to be there. Another way to eliminate separators is to make sure that there are no changes in flooring. If you have a different flooring surface in the breakfast nook than in the kitchen, which means that you consider them different rooms. Continue your kitchen flooring into the breakfast nook so that it seems more like one room.

Italian food and decor is famous worldwide, and there are many people who like to make them as part of their homes and kitchens. Little paint, few accessories and arrangement of furniture can easily give this look to any home. Good wine and cooking are basic to any Italian theme, and Italian style kitchen decor is very popular.
It is not difficult to find the items that complete the look of Italian style kitchen decor, and there are various paintings, wall art items, and other such things that can become a part of the kitchen to give it a real Italian feel.
Some Italian Style Kitchen Decor Ideas
Italian style kitchen decor combines the elements of traditional and modern elements, giving elegance and grace to the kitchen. The first thing to consider when opting for an Italian theme is the color scheme. This theme makes use of warm colors, and this look cannot be achieved by using white. Yellow, orange, green or red are more vibrant colors that must be used, as they give warm and comfortable feeling to the kitchen.
The Italian style kitchen decor can be completed by using Italian style potteries or pictures in the kitchen, and color scheme that accentuates the space. If budget is a constraint, consider visiting a local antique shop, where you might be able to buy some inexpensive Italian decoration pieces. Sometimes, its easy to get real good pieces in consignment stores and yard sales.
Before deciding the color and decoration for Italian style kitchen decor, consider the space available, and keep in mind that it is not necessary to fill up every nook and corner of the kitchen as it may make the space look cluttered. Leave some spaces untouched, and it will add more space to the kitchen. The key to a good Italian style kitchen decor is to create the atmosphere of warmth and invitation. For a complete look, keep the lights soft, and avoid the modern sleek patterns.
For Italian style kitchen decor, large wooden tables make a good choice as they provide a good seating space for gathering of families and friends. Add the accessories that are made of copper, wood, clay, brass or terra cotta. To brighten up the backsplashes, use brightly painted tiles. Italian style kitchen decor is quite different from coffee kitchen decor, which is also a popular choice these days.
This theme involves furnishing the kitchen in a way that gives the feel of a coffee house. Some of the items that can be added to the kitchen for this theme are vintage coffee tin cans, aged coffee mills, vintage coffee house signage, signage from coffee houses, vintage labels for various brands and so on.

It’s a tough market out there if your looking to sell your home. Prices are lower and competition is higher than ever before. Buyers can take time to consider every aspect and scrutinize every detail, because let’s face it, right now the buyers are in control. As a homeowner this can be a daunting challenge, how to raise interest in your home without investing too much money?
One area to consider (as buyers surely are) is the kitchen of your home. Every home that has been previously lived in home on the market is expected to have a reasonably amount of wear and tear and seeing as how the kitchen is often the most functional room in your home it is also likely to be the one with the most depreciation. Buyers know this and are on the lookout for it. Obvious steps like an immaculate cleaning (if your house is on the market, you should be doing this at least once a week. We’re not talking about just making sure the counters are clear of clutter and wiped clean but big steps like moving the appliances out of their nooks to clean the floor underneath and wall behind, taking all the dishes, pots and pans out so you can properly clean out the cabinets.), and baking chocolate chip cookies before an open house (the oldest odorous trick in the real estate agents book) are a must if you want to make a good first impression but serious buyers will be looking at your home with more scrutiny.
No one wants to move into a home that will soon require renovation if they can help it. Why let an obstacle like this become a sticking point in your buyer’s mind. Put yourself in the home buyer’s mind, if you were choosing between a variety of options wouldn’t a future remodeling expense steer you away from one of your choices.
“Now wait a minute,” you may be saying “the condition of my kitchen isn’t that bad.” and you may be right. Just consider, however, that the buyer you are trying impress will see dozens if not hundreds of kitchens before making their final purchase. Every minute advantage you can give yourself increases the chances of selling not just your kitchen, but your entire home!
Certainly it is ridiculous to expect everyone trying to sell a home should remodel their kitchen. A complete kitchen remodeling, done properly by a professional can easily run into an expense of tens of thousands of dollars. Additionally a kitchen remodeling usually is shown in it’s best light with the addition of new appliances and as any homeowner knows appliances can easily spiral into quintuple digits on their own.
Now, it has been shown that kitchen remodels do nearly return 100% on investment (less on high-end remodels) but do you really want to be the seller in this market adding to the bottom line price of your home? A better option is to make smaller, less expensive improvements to your kitchen that will not only hide obvious signs of wear and tear but make your kitchen appear as it might have been remodeling more recently (if ever) than it has. Of the possible steps you can take kitchen cabinet refacing is probably both the most economical while at the same time being the most likely improvement to impress buyers when they walk into your kitchen for the first time.
Dingy, dirty, scuffed or yellowed kitchen cabinets are the first thing in the line of sight of potential buyers as they walk into your kitchen not only the first, but every-time so it’s important to improve that negative impression before it ever gets made. A remodeler may encourage you to replace aged cabinets and doors but that can be exorbitantly expensive. Refacing cabinets on the other hand can be achieved with much less fuss and expense and provide surprising results more quickly than replacement.
Once a professional determines whether or not your home is a good candidate for kitchen cabinet refacing, (don’t worry, most kitchens are, and most professional Kitchen Cabinet Refacing Delaware companies will do the estimates for free) you can have a completely ‘re-styled’ kitchen in as little as 3 days and the cost about 50% less than expensive new cabinets.
Remember, the kitchen is the ‘heart of your home’, when buyers see that you have done a good job of keeping this important and central room in good condition it can make the difference between a pass and a purchase!
Michiel Van Kets writes articles for Save on Kitchens, a leading kitchen cabinet refacing Delaware contractor providing great kitchen ideas for your kitchen remodeling needs. Don’t replace, reface!
