How To Successfully Adjust Your SEO For The New Google Page Rank Formula

SP. In the first quarter of 2011, several well known blogging sites have reported recently that Google is making or has made some serious changes to the official Page Rank formula recently that may have serious consequences with respect the methods that many optimizers pursue as their bread-and-butter SEO.

Alleged changes to the types of techniques are centered around (you guessed it) backlinking strategies.

Among the types of techniques that are allegedly to be devalued or that have been devalued already are some of the more common techniques that many optimizers and SEO services provide. These include but are not limited to:

1) Anchor and Title Links from Link Directories
2) Profile Links from Forums and URL Cataloging and Classifying Sites
3) Blog Comment and Forum Comment Signature Links
4) Links from Social Bookmarking Sites
5) Resource Links From Article Directories

One moderately popular writer in particular who will go nameless experimented and published an article expecting to see a Page Rank increase to a PR2 or 3 with only a few hundred links from the above sources.

Forgive me for being skeptical, but did he mean to publish this article in 2001 as opposed to 2011? Did it take his browser ten years to refresh before the digital publishing transaction went through?

When did the above linking techniques EVER have the power to move your PR to a 2 or 3 with that small of a backlink count?

I feel like I have to say something at this point. After having gone through several years of updates, algorithm changes tweaks here and tweaks there with just about little to no positive or negative effects on my websites, I am pretty confident that any webmaster will continue to benefit if they continue to do the following as a form of SEO:

Write Quality Articles For Their Own Websites. This is actually a pretty easy one. Just write some articles that reflect your opinion. Mix your timeless articles with some that are anchored to a time frame such as a news item. Be yourself. Be conversational. Sometimes, be a little controversial. The last one can be great linkbait.

Write Quality Articles That Others Will Publish On Their Websites Via Syndication. Let’s face it. We’re all pressed for time. Sometimes, there just aren’t enough hours in the day to get everything done, much less write a quality, well-researched, authority post on a controversial subject. So what do we so in that case? Easy. Publish one of our guest posts sitting in the que or grab a quality article from our favorite article directory and publish it. Done. There will always be a market for quality articles.

Continue To Build Backlinks From Trusted Sites. As stated before, the types of links in the list above have never been strong, at least not for the last several years. Seriously, when I read that post, I wanted to comment on their blog and ask them when was the last time they did some SEO. However, that being said, if you can produce some quality content and submit some quality guest posts, you will get quality links.

Additionally, in the article it was stated that social media (not social bookmarking) will play a increasing role in Google’s ranking algorithm.

How’s that for irony!?! The soon-to-be most easily manipulated source of behavioral information on the planet will be a major factor in ranking websites. No doubt, reports will inevitably rise as to which techniques work the best, being that the SEO and Marketing community is one of the tightest knit communities I have ever been part of.

All of this being said, my question is this: Are we moving forwards or backwards in this area? Will search results become more or less relevant in the future? Only time will tell.
