Q&A: I was going to buy a Kindle but then I thought for a few $’s more I can get a tablet. Is that a wise move?

Question by George: I was going to buy a Kindle but then I thought for a few $ ‘s more I can get a tablet. Is that a wise move?
I know there are many choices of tablets out there and I also know it depends on how I would use it. I’m probably a light user but I love “toys”. Is there any tablet worth buting that costs less than the IPad or the Galaxy?

Would You Like to Expand Your Front Porch? It’s Time You Thought About That

We get asked often the question “What can I do to decorate my porch without a lot of effort?” Or, “I’m not a great decorator, what easy decorating ideas do you have that looks great?” Front porch decorating is much like decorating any room of your home. Think four things: color, theme, focal point and purpose.   Color -  Choose Your Decorating Color Scheme

You can do an amazing decorating job just by using color. Don’t be afraid to use color. Not good with decorating color schemes? Neither am I; however I can pick out at least one color I like. So how do you choose a color? Browse through decorating books, visit a department store home furnishings department or go to your paint store and pick out some paint strips that you like. Paint strips give you great ideas of complementary colors, too!

So once you’ve chosen a color you like, what do you do with it? Try  painting the front door. The front door can serve as a focal point or it can be used to telegraph your decorating color scheme for the rest of the porch. So your first step is to go out on your porch or yard and determine a great color for your front door. Depending on the overall statement you want, that is, bold, trendy, subtle, or somewhere in between, choose a color that will complement that look. Then you might choose another complementary or contrasting color to go with that.

Theme

Most of us have at least some type of look or style we’d like for our front porch: country, Victorian, Southern, contemporary, southwestern, Tuscan, eclectic or even a sports theme.  Or perhaps you want a seasonal look depending on the time of year – spring or fall decorating, for example. Some prefer, especially those along the coast, a nautical look. Others, like in the southwest, might prefer a western theme. This will help determine the items you want to display on your porch. Look at garage sales, flea markets, your dollar store, or a thrift shop to find items like pictures for your wall, furniture, tables or other charming knick knacks to carry out your theme. Chances are you have some items in your home already that you can re-purpose for your porch.

Focal point

A focal point can be anything from the front door itself, a beautiful wreath on your front door or perhaps a wicker table, chairs, and colorful table cloth. Or, it could be beautiful hanging baskets, a work of art (painting or sculpture), or perhaps a favorite rocker or swing. Above all, make sure your “focal point” is obvious and it should be a great conversation starter.

Purpose

How will you use your porch the most? Will it be a gathering place for relaxing in the evening? Perhaps you want a place to listen to music or share an intimate glass of wine? Will you be entertaining on your porch? Do you want to create a private nook for reading or writing? Knowing how you will use your porch will help you select the right furniture and accessories.

From country decorating ideas to contemporary decorating, just follow these four concepts and you will be surprised at what you can do. Decorating on a dime is still possible today if you use your creativity and are resourceful in finding charming pieces for your porch at garage sales, flea markets or even your dollar store. Take your spouse, child or a friend and make it fun! See what you can create!

Have You Thought About Publishing A Book For The Amazon Kindle?

Have you ever thought about publishing your own book? Do you have a great novel tucked away in your desk? Or maybe you have a collection of short stories that you just haven’t got around to publishing? Maybe you would like to publish the biography of one of your relatives.

If any of the above apply to you then you may be interested to know that, not only there plenty of other people who share your ambition, but that the available publishing options are increasing daily. It has never been easier to get your book published. It’s not only easier – it is very much cheaper – and there are now options available which are one hundred percent free. As a matter of fact, if your book sells, you might even make some money.

For example, Amazon are a company who apart from being very successful, have a strong Association with books and reading. When they launched the original Amazon website in 1995, the way that many people bought books changed dramatically.

Later, in 2007, when Amazon launched the original Kindle e-book reader, the way that people read books also began to change. The subsequent release of the enhanced Kindle 2, quickly followed by the large display Kindle DX in 2009, ensured that e-book readers became accepted by the public and, although still fairly new, the market for both e-book readers and e-books began to grow exponentially.

One of the most important factors in the Kindle’s success – apart from the fact that it was an extremely well designed piece of hardware – was the large amount of Kindle books which were available for the Kindle users to choose from. Currently there are more than 400,000 Kindle books available on the Amazon website – and this number is growing at an average rate of 500 everyday.

In addition to changing the manner in which books are bought, delivered and read, the Kindle reader gives would-be authors the opportunity to have their work published and showcased by the world’s largest book seller. Having your book published in Kindle format is simple, fast and free. What’s more – so long as you fix the price of your book at the value between $1 and $9.99, Amazon will take no more than 30% of the sales price leaving 70% for you (minus a very small the lovely free – typically just a few cents – based upon how many kB of memory your book uses.

Before you can publish your book, you will require your own Amazon account. This is free – in fact, if you’ve ever bought anything from Amazon’s website then you already have your own free account and login. With your account in place, all you have to do is to format your book and upload it to Amazon’s website. One very easy way to achieve this is to format your book using Microsoft Word and then to save it in HTML format. This option can be found by selecting “save as” from the file menu. There are plenty of other methods available – but using Microsoft Word is one of the easiest and most accessible. Choosing a suitably attractive illustration for the cover of your book is also a good idea. This wil help to make your book more attractive to prospective buyers. This is also very simple to do, just upload your chosen image to Amazon’s website and you’re done. After that, all you need to do is fill in a few field, give your book a good, snappy title, fix your selling price – and you will be a published author!

Who’d Have Thought it? – A Computer Bringing Kids Back to Books

Who’d Have Thought it? – A Computer Bringing Kids Back to Books

Remember; An Ereader is the handheld electronic device, an Ebook is the title and text of the story it shows, and a reader ebook is a title and text designed for an ereader.

From day one parents and teachers do everything we can to encourage reading, but only a small percentage of those kids end up really enjoying the reading they are required to do. Is it possible reader ebooks will help settle this problem? The answer is a resounding yes.

Being cool in school is important and reading is just not ‘in’ right now. Like other computerized devices, this ‘hip’ new item could just about make your kid’s day. An ereader like the Kindle allows not only reading, but is loaded with cool features like, MP3 support and a built-in web browser! Your teenage student can even download their favorite music to play later while they’re reading, and even keep up on their email. Want to keep your young student reading while on vacation? Books too clumsy and heavy to travel with? Now we have the ultra slim, lightweight ereader with built in books, designed for travelers of all ages and all destinations.

The best Ereaders require no annual contracts and no monthly fees. With novels, textbooks, newspapers and magazines already available for ereaders what is there to lose? You have the flexibility to choose when to buy your books, and publishers will even send you free advance paragraphs before you choose to buy any given ebook.

A list of specifications include:

– Slim design allowing you to bring up to 1,500 books while size is the same as a thin magazine! – Blazing fast downloads in under 60 seconds, on 3G wireless supported in more then 100 countries. – Most weigh under 10.2 ounces which is lighter then the average paper-back book! – Enjoy 4-14 days of reading on a single charge! – With 16 shades of gray it’s possible to read the Kindle in any lighting, including bright sunlight!

In no more than 10 years eReaders will dominate the book world. Far from pushing kids away from books and towards ready made TV entertainment, computers just might be the device that opens up the joy of reading.

I’m an enthusiastic futurist, always interested in new and better ways to do just about anything. That might be an odd combination when I’m also a history buff and a book lover. Well, science to the rescue, because ebooks are the perfect answer. They are becoming one of those items that are so useful that I can’t live without them.
