Ebooks and Eyeballs: Twitter Trend #SampleSunday Goes Viral
Canyon Country, CA (PRWEB) December 15, 2010
A new search hashtag, #SampleSunday, took Twitter by storm on Sunday, December 12, and quickly spread throughout the twitterverse. Market-savvy independent authors used the new hashtag #SampleSunday to let readers know about free writing samples posted on author blogs and websites. Participating novelists, short story writers, and poets retweeted each others’ links, commented on writing samples, and rapidly spread the new Twitter meme.
“It’s difficult for indie authors to compete with traditional publishers in terms of marketing,” said David Wisehart of the Kindle Author blog. “Free Internet promotions like #SampleSunday can help level the playing field.”
Enthusiasm for the project grew throughout the day on Sunday, with many positive reviews from participating authors:
“This #SampleSunday is a lot of fun!” tweeted cpolkinhorn.
“Loving #SampleSunday,” tweeted Kingdom_Scribe.
“Enjoying #SampleSunday!” tweeted par2323.
“#SampleSunday is great fun!” tweeted GroovyMystery.
“#SampleSunday is cool,” tweeted DahgMahn.
The #SampleSunday initiative was conceived and promoted by indie author David Wisehart, who first proposed the Twitter experiment on his Kindle Author blog a few days before it launched.
The idea quickly spread among author forums, blogs, and websites, with some writers scheduling their #SampleSunday tweets days in advance. At least one author started a new blog to take advantage of #SampleSunday.
“It was a big success,” said David Wisehart. “I was thrilled to see so many indie authors jump on the bandwagon to promote their writing. I was especially pleased at the quality of the writing samples. I didn’t have time to read everyone’s samples—there were so many—but most of what I read was of very high quality. Indie authors were offering up some of their best writing, and I know I’ll be seeking out more from these writers.”
Several authors reported that new readers from twitter were visiting and commenting on their writing samples:
“thanks to #samplesunday I had 32 visits to my blog. What an awesome idea and now i have too many novels TBR. a good thing,” tweeted theapatra.
On Sunday David Wisehart got 123 page views for his writing sample, chapter one of his new mystery novel, Cold Reading.
“I’ll definitely be posting more chapters in the weeks to come,” said Wisehart. “I’m hoping to build a fan base for Cold Reading before it’s released next year.”
Indie authors who wish to participate in next week’s #SampleSunday on Twitter should read the Kindle Author post that launched the event: “What Is #SampleSunday?”
